For her solo exhibition Looking Back & Seeing Now in 2015, LAVA THOMAS installed two large-scale drawings based on photographs belonging to her grandmother on opposite sides of the gallery, facing each other. Suspended from the gallery’s ceiling beams was an inverted pyramid of 200 tambourines whose drums had been altered with mirrored disks, enlarged details of eyes from the portraits, lambskin, and suede. Fans caused the tambourines to spin slowly, creating a gentle rustling of bells.

Process & Place brought together six local visual artists — ANNE LAMBORN, AMY BERK, EDITH HILLINGER, BROOKE HOLVE, MARY CURTIS RATCLIFF, and ELIZABETH SHER — who separately attended the same artist residency program in New Zealand. The notion of place, the nature of retreat, and its impacts on the process of art-making were explored through an examination of the artists’ own work and experiences. Pictured: Edith Hillinger, Aerial View, 2010.
Abstract Visions celebrated the centennial of abstract painting, which had evolved from its original spiritual and utopian stance in the early 20th century to contemporary refutations of digital display. Pictured: NAOMIE KREMER, Reve, 1999.
The exhibition Bay Area Ceramics in 2012 presented works by CLAYTON BAILEY, VIOLA FREY, TED FULLWOOD, JON GARIEPY, MARY LAW, ANNABETH ROSEN, NANCY SELVIN, RICHARD SHAW, SANDY SIMON, JOHN TOKI, and WANXIN ZHANG.
For their two-person exhibition in 2016, RODNEY EWING and JAMIL HELLU presented new work from distinct projects that explored how we determine our relationships to cultural histories and personal experiences. In Present Tense, Hellu looks for ways to voice his despair over violence in the Middle East by producing works that claim his Arab roots.
Quiet Please: The Mental Game of Art & Tennis examined the call and response relationship between artist and viewer using the sport of tennis as a metaphor. Artists presented works that use tennis as a way to comment on human psychology: presentation, elitism, communication, and catharsis. Pictured: LIBBY BLACK, I Think It’s Bad When People Start Booing Between Serves, 2016.
With Liberty & Justice for Some featured over 150 portraits of immigrants to the United States by artists from Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Conceived in response to President Trump’s executive order temporarily banning travel to the United States by refugees and immigrants from some Muslim-majority countries, the exhibition toured from LA to San Francisco to the East Bay.
